An implant is an artificial root that is secured in the jaw. An implant looks a bit like a screw and is made of titanium.A crown, bridge or (partial) dentures can be placed on an implant.
How is an implant placed?
There are 2 ways to place an implant, the one-stage and two-stage treatment. In one-phase treatment, the implant is placed in a single operation. The implant consists of two parts; one that is anchored into the bone and one that protrudes above the gums.
After a certain period of time, a crown, bridge or denture is placed on the protruding part. In a two-stage treatment, in the first stage, the implant is placed in the bone.
Then it is covered again with gum tissue. Several months later, when the implant is well established in the bone, phase two follows.
A marker is placed on the ingrown implant. A crown, bridge or denture is placed on this after several weeks.
Does implant placement hurt?
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia. However, you may have some pain and swelling after the surgery. The dentist may prescribe medication for this.
Is every jaw suitable for an implant?
In principle, an implant can be placed in any adult if sufficient jawbone is present. If this is not the case, additional bone can usually be placed with surgery. In addition, it is important that the gums are healthy, especially if you still have your own teeth.
Usually the surgery succeeds. In a few cases, the implant may not bond well. This is more likely if you smoke. Cleaning the mouth, implant and denture is also important to ensure that you enjoy the implant for many years.
The dentist or a dental hygienist will talk about this in detail.
